Building Your Storage While Saving Money

Wouldn’t it be great if you could build up a supply of the things you already eat, and spend less money than you already do on groceries?  You can.  We tried to see what we could do by spending the same amount on our food budget, but shopped smarter.  We started out buying case-lots, and sale items, and then added coupons.  Who would have thought that coupons could be the magic ingredient?

By subscribing the Daily Herald Savvy Shopper Deal (click here), for just $16.44 per month, we got 5 sets of coupons each week.  We cut the coupons each week, with the idea that we’ll cut anything that we would be willing to take if it were free, or nearly free.  These are then filed in the coupon organizer we got from the Daily Herald (free with the Savvy Shopper Deal).

We also check out www.smartsource.com and www.boodle.com for online coupons often.

We then visit Pinching Your Pennies (PYP), (click here) every Tuesday night a great website full of people just like us (here in Utah even) who are always on the lookout for great deals, and match up the sales each week to the coupons available.  You can get your weekly list for the Smiths, Albertsons, Macey’s, etc. stores that matches up the best deals, and tells you which coupon to use.  They also help each other find clearance, and sale items.

We then mark the add, and the printout from PYP and decide what to get Wednesday morning when the add starts.  We typically save at least 50% on the groceries we buy, and with the 5 sets of coupons, we can actually build up a storage supply.  Let us know if you have more questions, we’ll even take you along on our next coupon shopping trip if you like.

We also found great prices and quality on dehydrated and dried items from Honeyville Grain.  You may have seen them in Utah (it appears they even have a store in Layton).  But, by shopping online at www.honeyvillegrain.com, you can save the sales tax (they only charge $4.49 per order shipping regardless of the size of the order), and it’s delivered right to your door, ready to be put in your pantry.  Many of you tried the eggs and corn flour tortillas at the preparedness event, they were great!  If you’re looking for the recipe for the scrambled eggs, it’s here.
