photosWe want your photos!
Your precious family photographs can be preserved forever, and enjoyed by family members all over the world by including them on our site (if you don't have one of your own).  We're happy to scan them for you if you don't have the equipment to do it, but if you do- even better!  Just include your scans as an attachment in your email to us, and send them along.  We usually have them online with the rest in a few days.

Tips on Scanning
Scan at a higher resolution than necessary for the Web.  Pictures on the Web are usually only 72 dpi, but because we archive them on a higher quality system, and are even planning on producing CD-ROM versions (see us at the Family Reunion if you'd like one), we scan ours at 300 dpi (or more).  This gives us more to work with, and then when we prepare them for our website, they are automatically reduced to 72 dpi and sized for the thumbnails and full-size pictures you see.
Another important lesson:  Save your pictures in JPEG format.  This is a compression method that allows the files to be transferred much more quickly via your modem.  This format allows a variety of compression levels (we use the High Quality compression).  This ensures the highest quality picture in the Archive for latter use, but still reduces the time to send us the email.  When we prepare it for the website, it is automatically recompressed to the Medium compression format.

The Archive
The versions of all the files in the Archive are even higher quality than what you see online.  This means we can produce print or high-quality electronic versions latter without having to track down the originals again.

The Information We Need
When you send a photo, please include:  A Caption (fun is O.K.), the Names of Everyone in the Photo (the best you know), the date the photo was taken, the place the photo was taken, and who has the original.

Other Archive Items
You'll notice we have a few documents (letters, newspaper articles, announcements, etc.) in the Archive.  You can send these along as well.  Sometimes maps are a good addition.  We even have some audio files online now, with more coming. And soon you'll be able to see videos on the site as well.  So anything is fair game.

There's No Time Like The Present
Considering the number of photos we have already scanned, I can assure you-we feel your pain!  But these photos mean a lot to everyone, and the comments we have received already make it worth the effort.  Not to mention the fact that they are now protected from loss.  So dig in and get those pictures scanned and sent to us!
